Worldwide Refugee Crisis

Can we find them a home?

As of 2022, there are over 30 million refugees worldwide.

Summary

At the beginning of 2024, 37.6 million refugees were under UNHCR protection. Currently, the largest refugee crisis is Syria’s, with 6.8 million Syrians displaced. The refugee crisis was exacerbated with crises in Afghanistan, Ukraine, South Sudan, etc., primarily due to conflict and violence. In the 2015-2016 Europe refugee crisis, Europe received over 2.5 million asylum applications, primarily from Syrian refugees.

The refugee crisis is usually caused by violations of human rights, hunger and famine, and climate change. Unfortunately, with many countries at capacity with how many resources they can provide to refugees, the issue might only get worse.

  • As people become refugees, they often aren’t guaranteed the basic human rights of a citizen. However, as per the UNHCR, refugees have the right to safe asylum, along with the same rights as any legal resident of that country (such as freedom of thought, movement, medical care, schooling, and right to work).

  • As neighboring nations are the most common havens for refugees to escape to, nations may sometimes offer “temporary protection” if they face a sudden large influx of people. This means that while the refugees don’t have a guarantee of permanent asylum, they may stay in the country or be admitted to other safe countries.

  • By educating yourself and others about refugees, you can advocate for refugees to resettle in your community. It’s also possible to help through sponsoring a refugee or donating to resettlement agencies.
