Plastic Pollution
Littering the planet.
This global crisis affects us all.
Summary
Plastics are made from fossil fuels, and have provided countless conveniences to our everyday lives, from plastic bags to even glitter and toothpaste. Unfortunately, as pollution continues to spread, increased plastic production makes it increasingly difficult to keep our planet clean. Over 308 million tons (or 280 million metric tons) are thrown away each year, with 46% of plastic waste being landfilled.
-
In 1950, the world produced about 2.2 million tons of plastic each year. As of 2023, the world produces about 496 million tons per year.
-
Currently, 20 companies contribute over half of all single-use plastic thrown away worldwide. 100 companies contribute to 90% of global single-use plastic production.
-
While cutting back on wasteful habits is always necessary, you may be able to further help by writing to your local city administration regarding your local corporations' plastic wastage and even drafting your own solutions!
