Global Warming
The Effects of a Heated Planet
The planet has risen in temperature by over 1° C over the past 100 years.
Summary
Global warming, primarily caused by human activity (through the release of greenhouse gases), has steadily gotten worse over the past decades. Today, fossil fuels make up over half of the number of human-caused emissions, meaning that this industry is one of the leading causes of global warming.
Some scientists have proposed solutions; namely, climate-resilient infrastructure (especially in low- and middle-income countries), restoring and managing natural ecosystems, and using Earth system modeling to predict climate patterns, so that humanity is able to create solutions prior to the occurrence of devastating events.
-
Due to something called the “tragedy of the commons,” every nation hopes that another nation will take measures against climate change. Therefore, due to no action actually being done, climate change consistently gets worse.
-
While more than half of the countries of the world are taking action against the effects of natural disasters like droughts, floods, and disease through one-time safety measures, very few are creating long-term, adaptable solutions to effects of climate change.
Across the board, water safety and security are among one of the only vulnerabilities being tackled head-on.
-
Let others know of the dangers of global warming, as not many understand all the details of the situation. Find ways to help victims in your local community (e.g. helping shelters & animal shelters, contributing to flood-relief efforts, etc.)
