Air Pollution

What are you breathing?

Air pollution kills 8 million people
each year.

Summary

Air pollution has become an extremely common problem in modern society, with even short-term exposure leading to conditions like asthma and cardiac problems. Currently, about nine out of ten people who live in urban areas are affected by air pollution, and 99% of the global population breathes air that exceeds World Health Organization limits. Air pollution causes 11.6% of all global deaths and is nicknamed “the invisible killer.”

  • According to the NIEHS

    • Ozone: Atmospheric gas; often called “smog” at ground level.

    • Noxious gases: Carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, etc. They are components of motor vehicle emissions.

    • Particulate Matter: Composed of chemicals like sulfates, carbon, or mineral dust.

  • Policies like the “Clean Air Act” have been steadily making progress toward improving air quality, supported by research at institutions like the NIEHS who have conducted decade-long studies on air pollution regulations. Initiatives like the Alliance for Clean Air have been bringing business leaders together to reduce air pollutant emissions, and world leaders have been convening at conferences like COP26 to find solutions.

  • Not only does taking public transportation and using air purifiers help reduce outdoor and household pollution, helping out at your local community garden or getting involved with your local clean air initiative can all help push for further air-centered legislation in your community.
